Data Usage and Licensing Terms

We are happy when the astronomical data, images, and analyses (such as light curves and sunspot relative numbers) provided on sonnensystem.com and our standalone data archive are used for education, science, and amateur astronomy. To protect our work, the following terms of use apply.

Copyright for Editorial Content

All editorial content, including texts, reports, and blog posts, as well as the website’s layout and design, are protected by copyright law. Any reproduction, modification, or distribution of these materials beyond the scope of copyright law requires prior written consent from the website owner.

Exception: Astronomical Data & Archive

Excluded from this are the data and archive contents mentioned in the following section, which we have intentionally placed under a Creative Commons license to support astronomical research and education:

General License: CC BY-NC-SA 4.0

Unless otherwise noted (e.g., official NASA/JPL imagery), all self-collected data, graphics, JSON feeds, and archive images are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license.

This means you are free to share and adapt the material in any medium or format, under the following terms:

  • Attribution: You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. For web publications, we require a clear, clickable link to https://sonnensystem.com or directly to our archive.
  • NonCommercial: You may not use the material for commercial purposes (e.g., paid apps, commercial publications) unless you have obtained written permission from us beforehand.
  • ShareAlike: If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.

Scientific and Academic Use

We highly encourage the use of our data for research papers, school projects, and university studies! We would greatly appreciate a brief notification or a link/copy of your publication.

Automated Access and Scraping

Accessing our public JSON files for personal or educational projects is permitted. However, aggressive “scraping” or mass downloading from the archive website or the WordPress environment that impacts our server performance is strictly prohibited. Please keep your script request intervals fair (e.g., fetching the current solar image a maximum of once per day).

Disclaimer of Liability

All data (including photometric analyses and R-values) are provided “as is” and to the best of our knowledge. We make no warranties regarding the absolute scientific accuracy or uninterrupted availability of the data.
